Less Falls; Maplewood partners with Algonquin College to conduct much needed Fall Prevention Research
Less Falls; Maplewood partners with Algonquin College to conduct much needed Fall Prevention Research

In Fact, 20-30% of seniors experience 1 or more falls each year, but not if a group of Algonquin College’s OTA/PTA (Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant) students have anything to say about it!

Since March, OTA/PTA students have been conducting preliminary research for a much larger study into fall prevention. The project which is expected to begin in Fall 2017, saw four Algonquin College students busy measuring, counting and analyzing our residents’ physical mechanics.

Twenty of Maplewood’s eager residents volunteered to join the study by participating in:

  • Exercise classes designed for fall prevention,
  • One on one physiotherapy sessions with our resident Physiotherapist,
  • Walking groups, and
  • A fall prevention presentation

Residents truly enjoyed their experience with the professional guidance of the Algonquin students, and were pleasantly surprised to see the positive results from all of their hard work.

Expect to learn more about this project as Maplewood continues their participation in the Autumn.
