We are proud to introduce Wisdom Wednesdays, a new series where we sit down with a resident every two weeks and ask them a thoughtful question. Each conversation invites them to reflect on meaningful moments from their past or share advice shaped by their life experiences.
This series is close to our hearts because we believe in celebrating the voices and perspectives of our residents. Their wisdom is a gift, and we want to share it with not only our communities but also with families, friends, and anyone who loves hearing stories that inspire and connect.
You can watch each new installment in our Wisdom Wednesdays Playlist.
Wisdom Wednesdays: Clare
For this week’s Wisdom Wednesday, Clare shared her perspective on aging — and it’s full of insight, warmth, and reflection.
Clare grew up surrounded by strong women, including her own mother, who lived to 101½ while remaining sharp and full of life. Observing her mother, Clare learned that getting older doesn’t mean losing your mind or your spark — it’s simply another stage of life, rich with experience and stories to tell.
In her own words, Clare points out that while aging can bring physical challenges, such as changes in eyesight or hearing, it doesn’t define a person’s mind, spirit, or capacity to engage with the world. She emphasizes the importance of compassion and patience — qualities that make a real difference in how older adults are treated and how they experience each day.
Clare also reflects on the community at Riverstone, where she notes the kindness and care of staff. For her, this compassion enhances the quality of life and fosters a sense of dignity and respect for all residents.
Her story reminds us that we all age differently and that each stage of life carries its own wisdom. Aging is not about decline — it’s about perspective, patience, and the enduring value of human connection.
Clare’s message is simple but powerful: approach aging with compassion, embrace the uniqueness of every stage of life, and never underestimate the wisdom that comes with growing older.

Wisdom Wednesdays: Luba
For this week's Wisdom Wednesday, we sat down with Luba, who shared a beautiful, heartwarming memory about a song that instantly transports her back to her childhood: "You Are My Sunshine."
It's amazing how a simple melody can hold so much history, emotion, and connection. For Luba, the song isn't just a tune; it's the soundtrack to a childhood rich with community and simple, shared joy.
Luba recalls growing up in a close-knit, rural area where entertainment wasn't store-bought—it was created. She describes a time when friends would gather for frequent house parties. As she put it, "All we had was ourselves." This necessity bred genuine connection, leading to a strong support system where neighbors truly looked out for one another. They were, in her words, "a big family in the community."
At every single one of those house parties, someone would eventually suggest: "Let's sing 'You Are My Sunshine.'" The song became an unofficial anthem for their tight-knit group, symbolizing the warmth, closeness, and support they shared.
When Luba hears the familiar notes today, she's instantly taken back to those moments of pure, unadulterated friendship and community spirit. It's a powerful reminder that the best memories are often made not through expensive activities, but through the simple act of coming together.
Luba's story reminds us of the profound impact of simple traditions and the enduring strength of community bonds. What song takes you back to a wonderful time and place?

As we age, changes in our sleep patterns are natural, but that doesn’t mean we have to accept poor sleep. Sleep quality can decline due to factors like hormonal changes, medical conditions, and lifestyle habits, but with a few key strategies, you can improve your sleep and wake up feeling more rested and refreshed.
1. Stick to a Regular Sleep Schedule
Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to fall asleep and wake up at the same time each day. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time, even on weekends, to improve your sleep rhythm.
2. Create a Relaxing Bedtime Routine
Developing a calming pre-sleep routine signals to your brain that it's time to wind down. Activities like reading, listening to calming music, or practicing relaxation exercises can help ease the transition into sleep and reduce the time it takes to fall asleep.
3. Optimize Your Sleep Environment
A comfortable sleep setting is essential for good quality rest. Make sure your bedroom is cool, quiet, and dark. Invest in a comfortable mattress or mattress cover, and pillows. Minimize distractions like electronics or loud noises.
4. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol
Both caffeine and alcohol can interfere with sleep, especially if consumed in the afternoon or evening. Caffeine is a stimulant that can keep you awake, while alcohol may disrupt sleep cycles. Try to avoid them several hours before bed.
5. Stay Active During the Day
Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper sleep. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise during the day, but avoid vigorous exercise too close to bedtime, as it may be too stimulating.
6. Keep An Eye On Your Diet
Eating large or heavy meals late in the evening can cause discomfort and disrupt your sleep. Opt for a light, easily digestible snack if you're hungry before bed. Also, try to avoid drinking too much fluid before sleep to prevent waking up during the night to use the bathroom.
7. Manage Stress and Anxiety
Stress and anxiety are common causes of poor sleep, especially as we age. Practice stress management techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or journaling to calm your mind before bed. If necessary, seek support from a therapist or counselor.
8. Consult with Your Doctor
If you’re still struggling with sleep despite making lifestyle changes, it’s a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. They can identify any underlying health issues, such as sleep apnea, that may be affecting your sleep and recommend appropriate treatment.
Who knew you can improve your sleep quality with some simple adjustments? By sticking to a regular sleep schedule, creating a calming bedtime routine, and optimizing your sleep environment, you can significantly enhance your rest. Remember that good sleep is vital for overall health, so take the time to prioritize it as part of your self-care routine.

At Riverstone, our Wishing Well program is about more than granting wishes—it’s about creating moments. Moments where residents and their families can come together, laugh, reminisce, and feel the joy of something truly special. And sometimes, when everything falls perfectly into place, those moments become unforgettable.
This wish could not have created a more perfect day for one of our beloved Oakpark Retirement residents, Mr. Orval Harron.
Orval lives on our Memory Care floor, and though baseball has always been at the heart of his life, he hadn’t stepped foot in a ballpark in more than 15 years. For a man who not only grew up playing the game but went on to dedicate much of his life to coaching it, that’s far too long.
Baseball wasn’t just Orval’s pastime—it was his passion, his calling, and his way of giving back. With his wife Betty and their children often by his side, baseball became a family affair. He devoted countless hours to coaching young boys and girls, teaching them not just how to throw a ball but how to believe in themselves.
Orval’s specialty was pitching. He had an incredible gift for breaking down the fundamentals—arm action, release point, balance—into a language that every player could understand. Over the years, he coached his way through multiple leagues, including time with the Ontario Blue Jays AAA Ball Club, who went on to win the 1996 Connie Mack Championships. Some of the players Orval mentored even went on to the Major Leagues. His influence stretched far beyond the diamond—he shaped lives, instilled confidence, and left an enduring mark on the sport he loves.
And so, when the Wishing Well set out to bring Orval back to the ballpark, we knew it had to be something extraordinary.
On this special day, Orval, joined by his daughter Barbara, son David, and daughter-in-law, attended the Ottawa Titans’ final home game of the season. From the moment he was greeted by the team’s spirited mascot, Cappy, the excitement was written all over his face.
The highlight of the day came when Orval sat down with pitcher Zack Cameron (#20)—who was set to play that very game. The two shared a deep conversation about pitching mechanics, strategies, and their mutual love for the game. Watching Orval light up as he spoke “baseball talk” with someone who understood was nothing short of magical.
Then it was time for the first pitch. Like any true ballgame experience, there were hot dogs, cold beers, cheering fans, and of course, plenty of family smiles. To make the day even sweeter, the Titans capped off the game with an incredible 9–1 victory—sealed by a Grand Slam homerun!
Could anyone ask for a better day?
We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this wish come true. A heartfelt thank you to the Ottawa Titans organization, Titans executive Mark Hunter, and pitcher Zack Cameron for going above and beyond to create this cherished memory for Orval and his family.
It was more than a baseball game. It was a reminder of the joy of reliving passions, the power of family moments, and the beauty of wishes fulfilled.
