As our loved ones age, it’s common for them to experience changes in their behavior, mood, and cognitive function. For family caregivers, navigating these changes can be both challenging and emotionally taxing. Whether it’s a gradual shift in personality, increased forgetfulness, or more noticeable signs of confusion or agitation, understanding the reasons behind these behavioral changes and knowing how to offer support is key to providing compassionate care.

Senior behavior changes can stem from a variety of factors, including aging, medical conditions, medications, or emotional stress. As a family caregiver, it’s important to approach these changes with patience, empathy, and a willingness to adapt to your loved one’s evolving needs. In this blog, we’ll explore common behavior changes seniors may experience, the possible causes behind them, and practical ways family caregivers can offer support.

Common Senior Behavior Changes

  • Memory Loss and Forgetfulness: One of the most common behavior changes in seniors is forgetfulness, ranging from mild memory lapses to more serious memory impairment. This can include forgetting appointments, misplacing items, or having trouble recalling familiar names or places. In some cases, memory loss may be a sign of conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Mood Swings or Irritability: Seniors may experience increased irritability, mood swings, or feelings of sadness. These emotional shifts can be caused by a variety of factors, including chronic illness, pain, medication side effects, or the loss of independence. Sometimes, seniors may also struggle with feelings of isolation, anxiety, or depression.
  • Confusion and Disorientation: As seniors age, they may become confused or disoriented, especially in unfamiliar settings. This could manifest as difficulty recognizing their own home or loved ones, wandering, or becoming easily agitated. Confusion can be triggered by cognitive decline, medications, infections, or dehydration.
  • Loss of Interest in Activities: Seniors may gradually lose interest in hobbies, social events, or activities they once enjoyed. This change in behavior can stem from physical limitations, depression, or simply the lack of motivation that can come with aging. In some cases, loss of interest in activities can be a sign of underlying health issues, including depression or chronic illness.
  • Increased Dependency or Reluctance to Accept Help: Many seniors experience a sense of pride or independence throughout their lives. As they age, some may resist help or become frustrated when they can no longer do things they once did easily. This can manifest as refusal to accept assistance with daily tasks, such as bathing, dressing, or taking medications.

Understanding the Causes of Behavior Changes
Before jumping into strategies for dealing with behavior changes, it's important to understand the potential causes behind them. Identifying the root cause can help caregivers respond in a way that’s most helpful for their loved one.

  • Cognitive Decline or Dementia: Conditions like Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia can cause significant memory loss, confusion, and changes in behavior. These conditions can affect communication, decision-making, and emotional regulation. As dementia progresses, seniors may experience agitation, personality changes, or even paranoia.
  • Medications: Many seniors take multiple medications for various health conditions. Some medications can have side effects that affect mood, cognition, or behavior. It’s important to regularly review medications with a healthcare provider to ensure they are still necessary and that the side effects are being managed properly.
  • Physical Health Issues: Pain, illness, or physical discomfort can lead to behavioral changes. Seniors with chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes, or heart disease may become more irritable or withdrawn. Infections, dehydration, and sleep disturbances can also cause confusion or agitation in seniors.
  • Mental Health: Mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety, are common in seniors and can lead to changes in behavior. Seniors who feel lonely, isolated, or stressed may experience emotional swings, lack of motivation, or a withdrawal from social interactions. Depression can often be overlooked, but it’s important to recognize its symptoms and seek treatment.
  • Loss of Independence: As seniors face age-related challenges, they may feel a loss of independence, which can lead to frustration, anger, or withdrawal. The inability to do things on their own may trigger anxiety or sadness, resulting in behavior changes.

How Family Caregivers Can Provide Support
While dealing with behavioral changes can be difficult, family caregivers can take several steps to offer the best possible support. Here are some practical strategies to help manage senior behavior changes with compassion and patience:

  • Stay Calm and Patient: One of the most important things a caregiver can do is remain calm. Seniors may exhibit challenging behaviors, but responding with patience and understanding is crucial. When a senior becomes agitated or frustrated, it’s easy for emotions to escalate, but staying calm can help de-escalate the situation and show that you are there to support them.
  • Communicate Clearly and Gently: Communication is key, especially when dealing with memory loss or confusion. Speak slowly and clearly, and make sure to use simple language. Give your loved one time to process information and respond, and avoid overwhelming them with too many questions or instructions at once. If they seem upset or confused, try to reassure them gently rather than trying to reason with them.
  • Create a Safe and Structured Environment: A stable environment can help reduce confusion and agitation. Seniors who are disoriented or confused often benefit from routine and familiarity. Establish a daily schedule for meals, medications, and activities, and ensure that the living space is well-organized and safe. Reducing clutter and labeling important items can help seniors feel more secure in their environment.
  • Encourage Social Interaction and Activities: Seniors who experience behavioral changes due to depression or isolation may benefit from social engagement. Encourage participation in social activities, whether within the family or in a senior community. Even simple activities like playing a game together, taking a walk, or watching a favorite movie can help lift their mood and reduce feelings of loneliness.
  • Address Health and Medication Concerns: If you notice changes in behavior that seem related to health issues or medications, talk to a healthcare provider. Physical health problems, medications, and sleep disturbances can all contribute to behavioral changes. It’s important to regularly review medications and discuss any concerns with a doctor to ensure that treatments are appropriate and effective.
  • Offer Help with Daily Tasks: As seniors experience physical decline, they may become more dependent on caregivers. It’s important to offer assistance with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, or eating, but it’s equally important to respect their desire for independence. Encourage them to do as much as they can on their own while offering help when needed. Be gentle in your approach and avoid being overly controlling.
  • Seek Professional Support: If behavior changes become overwhelming or difficult to manage, don’t hesitate to reach out to professionals for help. A geriatric care manager, social worker, or counselor can provide advice and resources tailored to your loved one’s specific needs. Support groups for caregivers can also be beneficial for sharing experiences and receiving emotional support from others in similar situations.
  • Practice Self-Care: Being a family caregiver can be emotionally and physically draining, so it’s important to take care of yourself. Make time for relaxation, hobbies, and social activities. Caring for a loved one can be all-consuming, but you need to maintain your own well-being to be the best caregiver you can be. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from other family members or professional caregivers when needed.

Dealing with senior behavior changes can be challenging, but with the right approach, family caregivers can provide valuable support and help their loved ones maintain their dignity and comfort. Patience, understanding, and clear communication are essential tools for navigating behavioral changes with empathy and love. Remember that you don’t have to go through this journey alone—reaching out for professional guidance, support groups, and assistance is a vital part of being a caregiver. By adapting to the needs of your loved one and offering thoughtful care, you can help them enjoy a higher quality of life, even during times of transition.

Swimming and water aerobics are more than just a great way to cool off on a warm day—they're some of the best forms of exercise for seniors. The natural buoyancy of water supports your body, reducing stress on your joints while allowing you to move more comfortably and confidently.

Whether you're swimming laps, taking part in a water aerobics class, or simply walking through the shallow end of the pool, spending time in the water can help improve both your physical and mental well-being.

1. Gentle on Your Joints

One of the biggest advantages of water-based exercise is that it's low impact. Water helps support your body weight, making movements feel easier while reducing pressure on your knees, hips, ankles, and back. This makes swimming and water aerobics an excellent option for seniors living with arthritis, joint pain, or limited mobility.

2. Improve Strength and Balance

Water naturally creates resistance, meaning your muscles work a little harder with every movement—even if it doesn't feel like it. Over time, regular swimming or water aerobics can help build muscle strength, improve balance, and increase flexibility, all of which contribute to greater stability and confidence in everyday activities.

3. Support Heart Health

Swimming is an effective cardiovascular workout that gets your heart pumping without placing unnecessary strain on your body. Regular aerobic exercise can help support healthy blood pressure, improve circulation, and boost overall heart health.

4. Stay Active While Staying Cool

During the warmer months, exercising outdoors isn't always comfortable. Swimming offers a refreshing alternative that allows you to stay active while keeping your body cool, making it easier to maintain a regular fitness routine throughout the summer.

5. Boost Your Mood

Exercise is well known for supporting mental health, and water activities are no exception. Swimming and water aerobics can help reduce stress, improve mood, and increase energy levels. Participating in group classes also provides opportunities to meet new people, stay socially connected, and enjoy exercising together.

Dive Into Wellness at Riverstone

At Riverstone, wellness is about more than staying active—it’s about enjoying life, connecting with others, and having opportunities to do the things you love. With access to pools and water aerobics classes, residents can enjoy the many benefits of water-based exercise right within their community.

So grab your swimsuit, join a class, and make a splash this summer!

Sunny days are one of the best parts of the season. Whether you're enjoying a morning walk, tending to the garden, or relaxing with friends on the patio, spending time outdoors can do wonders for your mood and overall well-being.

As we get older, however, our skin becomes more delicate, and our bodies can have a harder time regulating temperature. That means taking a few extra precautions is important to stay comfortable, healthy, and safe while enjoying the sunshine.

Here are some simple ways to make the most of the warmer weather.

Protect Your Skin

Our skin naturally becomes thinner and more sensitive with age, making it easier to burn and increasing the risk of skin damage.

Before heading outside:

  • Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to all exposed skin.
  • Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you're sweating.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses to shield your face and eyes.
  • Choose lightweight clothing with long sleeves when spending extended time outdoors.

Even on cloudy days, UV rays can still reach your skin, so it's worth making sun protection part of your daily routine.

Stay Hydrated

Dehydration can happen more quickly in hot weather, and seniors may not always feel thirsty even when their body needs water.

To stay hydrated:

  • Keep a reusable water bottle nearby throughout the day.
  • Sip water regularly instead of waiting until you feel thirsty.
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, and oranges.
  • Limit alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.

If plain water isn't your favourite, try adding slices of lemon, cucumber, or fresh mint for a refreshing twist.

Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

Temperatures are usually highest between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

If possible:

  • Plan walks or outdoor activities for the early morning or evening.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.
  • Use fans or air conditioning to cool down after spending time outside.

Know the Signs of Heat-Related Illness

It's important to recognize when your body is getting too hot.

Watch for symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Excessive sweating or hot, dry skin
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Confusion

If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, move to a cool place, drink water, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen or don't improve.

Don't Forget Your Lips and Eyes

Sun protection isn't just for your skin.

Use a lip balm with SPF to help prevent dry, sunburned lips, and wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays to help protect your eyes from long-term sun damage.

Enjoy Summer Safely

Getting outside is a wonderful way to stay active, socialize, and enjoy everything the season has to offer. With a little preparation, you can spend more time doing what you love while staying protected from the heat and the sun.

At Riverstone Retirement Communities, we encourage residents to enjoy the outdoors safely all season long. Whether you're relaxing on the patio, joining a community event, or taking in the beautiful surroundings, a few simple habits can help ensure every sunny day is a great one.

Here's to a safe, healthy, and sunshine-filled summer!

For years, David Pasho considered writing about his role in one of the most extraordinary covert operations of the Cold War—Project Azorian, the CIA's secret mission to recover a sunken Soviet submarine from nearly three miles beneath the North Pacific Ocean.

While several books have explored the engineering feat behind the mission, none had revealed the story of the deep seabed mining cover used to conceal its true purpose. As the last surviving member of the small team responsible for developing and maintaining that cover story, David knew it was time to share this unique piece of history.

After moving to Rosepark Retirement Community, David found the time and inspiration to complete his manuscript. Following months of writing, research, and editing, Covering Azorian was published just one year after he joined our community.

Writing a book is an incredible achievement, requiring dedication, perseverance, and passion. We're proud to celebrate David and congratulate him on the publication of Covering Azorian. We are honoured to support him as he shares this milestone with family, friends, fellow residents, and staff.

Congratulations, David!

Every June, Ontario celebrates Seniors Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the achievements, contributions, and lasting impact of older adults across the province. It's an opportunity to reflect on the important role seniors play in our families, communities, and to celebrate the experiences and wisdom they continue to share every day.

At Riverstone Retirement, Seniors Month is especially meaningful. This month, we're proud to celebrate the residents who make our communities so vibrant. Our communities are home to remarkable individuals whose stories, accomplishments, and perspectives have helped shape the world around them. Taking time to celebrate these contributions helps us appreciate the wisdom, resilience, and perspective that older adults bring to our lives every day.

Celebrating the People Who Shape Our Communities
One of the most meaningful parts of Seniors Month is taking time to celebrate the stories that have shaped each person's journey. Behind every resident is a lifetime of experiences, accomplishments, challenges, and cherished memories that have helped make them who they are today.

At Riverstone, we have the privilege of getting to know residents from all walks of life. From career milestones and family traditions to personal passions and unforgettable adventures, every story adds to the vibrant community we share today. Taking time to listen to and celebrate these experiences reminds us of the value of connection, perspective, and the lasting impact each person has on those around them.

The Power of Experience and Wisdom
One of the greatest gifts seniors share is their perspective. Decades of life experience bring valuable insights, resilience, and wisdom that can only be gained through lived experience.

At Riverstone Retirement, we believe these stories deserve to be celebrated. They are part of what makes our community such a special place, and they continue to inspire residents, families, and team members alike. Through initiatives like our Resident Spotlight and Wisdom Wednesdays video series, we're proud to highlight the voices and experiences of our residents, through which they share stories from their past, wisdom and advice they've gathered along the way, and their present-day experiences of what they enjoy most about life in their community.

Together, these stories celebrate not only where our residents have been, but who they are today. They remind us that the experiences, resilience, and wisdom of older adults continue to enrich our community and inspire those around them.

Continuing to Thrive at Every Age
Seniors Month is also a reminder that life continues to be filled with opportunities for growth, connection, and new experiences. Aging is not defined by limitations. It's defined by the relationships we build, the experiences we share, and the impact we continue to have on those around us.

Retirement is not just about looking back on a life well lived; it's also about continuing to create new memories and experiences. We see residents embracing each day in meaningful ways, whether that's participating in activities, exploring hobbies, or spending time with friends.

Celebrating Seniors Every Day
While Seniors Month provides a special opportunity for recognition, we believe seniors should be celebrated all year long. Their stories, accomplishments, and contributions continue to shape our communities and enrich the lives of those around them.

This June, we invite you to acknowledge and honour the amazing seniors in our lives across the province. Whether it's sharing a conversation, expressing gratitude, or listening to a cherished story, these moments help honour the people whose experiences and wisdom continue to make a difference.

From all of us at Riverstone Retirement, Happy Seniors Month!

Some wishes are grand, some are simple, and some are about creating a single, unforgettable moment of joy. This was one of those wishes — the kind that fills a room with emotion, brings tears to your eyes, and leaves a lasting smile on everyone involved.

Colleen Ethier, a proud resident of Foxview Retirement Community, is what you would call a 'Big Fan'  of the Ottawa Senators. Not just someone who watches the games, but someone who lives them. Her love for the team is woven into her daily life. On game days, you’ll find Colleen front and center in her black and red jersey, cheering passionately, never missing a moment. And the next day? You can count on a full recap, complete with her honest (and often spirited!) take on the refereeing.

So when we learned that Colleen’s wish was to attend a playoff game in person, we knew this was something special, something we had to make happen.

Just days later, we arrived at Foxview with a surprise she would never forget. Accompanied by our incredible mascot, Rudy, we presented Colleen with two tickets to Game 4. The moment was electric. Shock turned into joy, and joy into tears as reality set in. What started as an ordinary day quickly became extraordinary.

Then came game day.

Colleen came downstairs that morning, still in disbelief, asking if it was all real. It was, and she was absolutely glowing. Sharing the experience with her grandson Bobby made it even more meaningful. Together, they left the community filled with excitement, anticipation, and hope for a big Senators win.

And while the scoreboard didn’t deliver the outcome she had hoped for, the experience itself was everything she dreamed of, and more.

Colleen returned home still beaming, her spirit lifted, her heart full. Win or lose, it didn’t matter. For her, the day was a victory.

She had wondered if maybe she could be the lucky charm the team needed, and honestly, what a beautiful thought that was.

At Riverstone, moments like this are what the Wishing Well Program is all about. It’s about listening, caring, and turning meaningful wishes into lasting memories. Seeing the joy it brought to Colleen reminds us why we do what we do, because sometimes, the simplest wishes create the most powerful moments.

And we can’t wait to make the next one come true.

Wisdom Wednesday: Ann

Some moments in life are small in passing, but stay with us far longer than we expect.

In this week’s Wisdom Wednesday, Ann shares a childhood memory that reflects just how powerful an act of kindness can be. One that, even at nine years old, left a lasting impression that has stayed with her for decades.

Stories like Ann’s remind us that often, kindness shows up in everyday choices—opening a door, offering help, extending care to someone in need, or simply making space for someone who might otherwise feel alone. These gestures can become defining moments in another person’s life.

What makes kindness so meaningful is its lasting effect. Long after the moment has passed, it can shape how someone feels, how they see others, and even how they choose to treat the people around them. In that way, kindness has a ripple effect that continues well beyond the original act.

In the moment, you may not even realize how meaningful it is—but over time, you come to see just how important it ended up being.

Caregiving is a powerful act of love—but it’s also one of the most emotionally and physically demanding roles a person can take on. Whether you're supporting a loved one at home or staying closely involved after they’ve moved into a retirement community, the responsibility can take a toll over time.

Care often shows up in different ways—managing appointments, offering emotional support, visiting regularly, or helping navigate decisions. And when you're balancing that with work, family, and your own responsibilities, it’s easy to put your own needs last.

When you're focused on being there for someone you love, it can be hard to notice when you're running on empty—until you hit a breaking point.

This is caregiver burnout, and it's more common than you might think.

What Is Caregiver Burnout?

Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by the prolonged stress of caregiving. It often happens gradually and can be difficult to recognize in the moment.

You might feel like:

  • You’re constantly tired, no matter how much rest you get
  • You’re emotionally numb or quick to anger
  • You’re neglecting your own health, relationships, or responsibilities
  • You feel hopeless, resentful, or overwhelmed
  • You’re not doing “enough”—even when you’re doing everything

These feelings aren’t signs of weakness; they’re signs that you need support.

Common Signs to Watch For

Caregiver burnout can show up in different ways. Pay attention to:

Physical Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Headaches or frequent illness
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Chronic tension or body aches

Emotional Symptoms:

  • Anxiety, sadness, or irritability
  • Feeling detached from your loved one
  • Loss of interest in things you once enjoyed
  • Guilt or anger that feels constant

Behavioral Changes:

  • Withdrawing from friends or activities
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Neglecting your own needs or appointments
  • Relying on unhealthy coping strategies (like overeating or substance use)

When to Seek Help

It’s time to reach out when:

  • Caregiving is taking a toll on your health or quality of life
  • You’re struggling to balance caregiving with other roles (parent, spouse, employee)
  • Your loved one’s needs are becoming too complex to manage alone
  • You’re no longer able to be present or patient in the way you want to be

Remember: asking for help doesn’t mean giving up—it means caring better.

Where to Turn for Support

You don’t have to carry this alone. Here are some options:

Family & Friends

Let others know how you're feeling. Whether it’s help with visits, errands, or simply having someone to talk to, support can make a meaningful difference.

Support Groups

Connecting with others who understand your experience can be incredibly reassuring. Many caregiver support groups are available both in person and online.

Health Professionals

Speaking with a doctor, therapist, or social worker can help you process stress and develop strategies to better manage burnout.

Your Retirement Community Team

If your loved one lives in a retirement community, remember that the care team is there for you as well. Staying connected, asking questions, and sharing concerns can help ease the emotional weight and ensure you feel supported in your role.

You Deserve Care, Too

You can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t stepping away from your role—it’s sustaining it. When you feel supported, rested, and heard, you’re better able to show up for your loved one in a meaningful way.

Wisdom Wednesday: Fran

What does success really mean?

It’s a question that can have many different answers, and often, those answers shift as life unfolds. What feels important in our early years can look very different decades later, shaped by experience, relationships, and the moments that stay with us.

In this week’s Wisdom Wednesday, Fran shares her perspective on how her definition of success has evolved over time. Like many, she once viewed success through a more traditional lens — building a career, working hard, and striving toward long-term goals. Her path in nursing brought a strong sense of purpose, allowing her to care for others and stay connected to her community.

But as the years passed, life introduced new roles and responsibilities — raising a family, supporting loved ones, and navigating major life transitions. Through it all, her understanding of success began to shift.

Today, Fran’s perspective is grounded in what truly matters to her: the people she’s supported, the connections she’s maintained, and the sense of fulfillment that comes from doing your best in each chapter of life.

Her story is a thoughtful reminder that success isn’t fixed; it grows with us.

As we age, we often focus on heart health, memory, and mobility—but there’s one vital system that’s easy to overlook: the digestive system. Gut health plays a major role in overall well-being, especially for older adults. From immunity to mood, your gut does more than just process food—it helps you feel your best, inside and out.

Here’s why it’s worth paying attention to your gut, and how to keep it in good shape as you age:

Over time, our digestive systems naturally slow down. The body produces less stomach acid and digestive enzymes, making it harder to break down food. This can lead to issues like bloating, constipation, or nutrient deficiencies.

In addition, the gut is home to trillions of bacteria—often called the gut microbiome—that help regulate everything from digestion to immunity. As we age, changes in diet, medications, and lifestyle can affect the balance of these bacteria, sometimes leading to discomfort or health concerns.

How Gut Health Affects Overall Well-Being

A healthy gut doesn’t just help with digestion—it impacts:

  • Immune function – A large portion of your immune system lives in the gut.
  • Mood and brain health – The gut and brain are closely connected; poor digestion can affect mood, memory, and mental clarity.
  • Energy levels – When digestion is off, your body may not absorb nutrients properly, which can lead to fatigue.
  • Inflammation and chronic disease – Poor gut health can contribute to inflammation, which is linked to a range of age-related conditions.

Tips for Supporting Gut Health as You Age

1. Eat More Fiber
Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are packed with fiber that supports digestion and helps keep things moving.

2. Stay Hydrated
Water is essential for smooth digestion. Aim to drink throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

3. Add Probiotics and Fermented Foods
Yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and other fermented foods can help introduce healthy bacteria to your gut.

4. Limit Processed Foods and Sugar
Highly processed foods can upset the balance of gut bacteria and lead to inflammation.

5. Be Mindful of Medications
Some medications, especially antibiotics, can affect gut bacteria. Talk to your doctor if you notice changes in your digestion.

6. Move Your Body
Even gentle daily movement, like walking, can stimulate digestion and support gut function.

Everyone’s digestive system is different, and changes are common with age. Pay attention to how your body feels and don’t hesitate to speak with your healthcare provider.
